Solar Flair 11 speaker profiles

Solar Flair 11 had a fantastic list of speakers.
Profiles came from European Space Agency, Cranfield University, Solar Power Portal, PETEC, Imperial College London, and Edinburgh University!

Professor James Durrant Imperial College London

James Durrant is Professor of Photochemistry in the Department of Chemistry, Imperial College London, and Deputy Director of Imperial College’s Energy Futures Lab.

Franz Ziering Bosch Solar Energy AG

Franz Ziering, Vice President, has worked at Bosch Solar Energy AG since 2001 (former Ersol solar Energy AG, taken over by Bosch in 2008).

Dr Tom Taylor Printable Electronics Technology Centre, CPI

Dr Tom Taylor is CPI’s Director of Printable Electronics and a co-founder of the PETEC centre. In 2004 he set up the Flexible Electronics substrates joint venture with DuPont Teijin Films, a precursor and supplier to PETEC. In 2011 CPI became part of the first Technology & Innovation Centre for the UK.

Dr David Lane Cranfield University

David Lane is Reader of Analytical Physics and Advanced Materials in Cranfield University’s Centre for Materials Science and Engineering at the Defence Academy, Shrivenham.  He joined Cranfield University in 1985 after spending three years in industry.

Prof. Tom McLeish, FRS Durham University

Tom McLeish did a first degree in physics and PhD (1987) in polymer physics at the University of Cambridge.  He became a lecturer in physics at the University of Sheffield, building a group working on the theory of dynamics of complex fluids.  In 1993 he took the chair in polymer physics at the University of Leeds.

Dr Chiara Candelise Imperial College London and University of Edinburgh

Dr Chiara Candelise is an experienced energy economist. She is currently a researcher at Imperial College London and University of Edinburgh and has been working on techno-economic, innovation and policy issues surrounding photovoltaics (PV) since 2005.

Dr Steve Welch ESP-KTN

Steve joined UCL in 1987 working in the electronics group at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory.  A long career at UCL followed, including hardware and software design for advanced instrumentation used on spacecraft for NASA, ESA and ISAS. 

Dr D.B. Sims-Williams Durham University

David Sims-Williams joined the academic staff at Durham University in the UK 11 years ago, following previous appointments at Alstom Research Labs and Reynard Motorsport (now Mercedes F1).  He has previously lived in Canada, India and Australia and holds degrees in Engineering from Cambridge and from Durham (PhD).

Emma Hughes Solar Power Portal

Emma Hughes is Editor of news and information website Solar Power Portal and bi-monthly magazine Solar Business Focus UK, and is now widely regarded as one of the most influential solar technology journalists in the country.

Dr. Giuseppe Colantuono Sheffield Solar Farm, University of Sheffield

Dr. Giuseppe Colantuono is the Research Analyst of the Sheffield Solar Farm, in the Physics
Department of the University of Sheffield. He holds a Master's degree in Physics from the
University of Turin, Italy (2002), and a PhD in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics from the Florida
State University, USA (2009).

Dr Douglas Halliday Durham University

Dr Halliday is Deputy Director of the Centre for Materials Physics and a member of academic staff in the Department of Physics. His research interests are in semiconductor materials for device applications. Dr Halliday uses advanced spectroscopic techniques to understand the optical and electrical properties of thin-film devices.

David Thorpe is the author of the newly published Earthscan Expert Guide to Solar Technology: Solar Energy for Heating, Cooling & Electricity, & The Earthscan Expert Guide to Sustainable Home Refurbishment.

Stewart Watkins
